They are cultivated in gardens during different seasons and are considered among the most important elements of landscape design, as they are the primary source of color in gardens.

Flowering herbaceous ornamentals may be:

• Annuals: Completing their life cycle—from vegetative growth to flowering and seed production—within less than one year.
• Biennials: Completing their life cycle over two years.

Some species produce cut flowers, making them suitable for commercial flower production.
